It initially appeared as a dessert staple in the 10th century, albeit a very different version than the one we know today. Carrots became an alternative sweetener to the more expensive honey, and was most famously used in an Iraqi dessert called khabis al-jazar, which is composed of carrots and milk, cooked with various spices, including cloves, ginger, and nutmeg.
